Last Christmas - Movie Review

Last Christmas

A story of an active, vibrant and fun girl totally pushed into the dark corner after a surgery.

“Last Christmas is a 2019 movie which belong to the family of romantic comedy films. It has directed by Paul Feig and written by Bryony Kimmings and Emma Thompson.  The movie gets a n extra sparkle from its main roles played by the famous and talented actress from Games Of Throne; Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding from the famous movie “Crazy Rich Asians”.

Her family and friends bring out Kate (Emilia) as a selfish, lazy and the funniest thing. She stubbornly refuses to take care of her body and she has no serious thoughts about her life.

When we gets into the movie, we see that the Kate described by her friends and family is not the real Kate. She has changed with her surgery. Before the transplant, she was a hardworking and a talented girl who ran after her dream of becoming a singer.

We all have to face a bitter time in our life. For Kate it is her turn. Even though she seems to be getting back to her normal way, she is tired of the people around her who always judges things and tell her what to do. No one of them understand that her life is not normal and how she actually feels behind her smiles and jokes, she cracks. She copes with her despondency with sex, booze and lot of junk food, which are the things her doctor has advised not to do.

She has no comfort from her family members and even her lover cheats on her, which she never worries. She see no depths in relationships. That is not because she do not love them but because she seems to be fed up of her own life and lost in the life journey without any guidance. There is a common belief, which says the people who laughs and jokes all the time showing them that they are very happy, are the people who are most depressed and lost. When you watch this money, we need no more example when we gets to know Kate.

Her family is immigrants from former Yugoslavia, as they say. In addition, her mom is presented as an over concerned, guilt tripping mom who cares too much but unable to recognize the true needs of her children. Her father stays away from them even though their mother has nothing wrong other than getting worried too much and overthinking. Her sister who is a disciplined girl, as mentioned and believed by their parents hides that she is a lesbian in a stable relationship.

Kates falls into greater difficulty after she loses her job and just felling miserable at an audition for a musical. She leaves home and now she becomes homeless even though she has a comfortable house with a warm bed.

Here, the film takes a twist in both its plot and Kate’s life. Her sudden meeting with Tom makes things turn to a better way for her. He is unlike anyone that she has ever met. He is weird and quirky who always keeps his mobile in the cupboard and tells Kate to look up into the sky every time. Kate who is lost and fed up finds light in Tom. They spend the time happily and Kate gets the chance to share all her hidden emotions. She gets a comfortable shoulder to lean on and shed her tears, which have being freeze for years. She cares for self and starts to enjoy the beauty in the world around her, which Tom shows. Limits drinking and stops sleeping with strangers anymore.

The storms takes it way again. Without any clue, Tom goes missing. Kate tries to find him in all the possible places but nothing happens. However, she takes a successful effort to restore the things she has destroyed. She makes up with her family members whom she has been avoiding since the surgery. She makes out things with her sister and her partner. She even enjoys her volunteering works and comforting unknown people when they are in difficult situation.

The big secret in the movie gets reveal at the end of the film. Which surprises all its audience as well as Kate.

Overall, “Last Christmas’’ conveys us that moments in life are very important and the best thing to enjoy them so we won’t have any regrets in the future. Life is unstable and temporary. Kate’s hatred towards her own self and her love for her own self shows a great difference, which the director gives his message to the audience about self-love.

Life is short, living it or destroying it is up to you.
